We had a very successful Winter Series this season. There was an increase in registrations in the large dinghy class due to the change of day from the first Sunday to the first Saturday of each month. There were similar numbers to last season in the small dinghies and sailboards. The total of registrations was 50 which included visitors to the Club. Registration was $5 per day ($15 for the series of four). A total of $650 was taken. Trophies cost $396 (including GST). Lasers 6, Laser Radials 10, Spirals 4, 125s 1, Optimists 3 Sabots 4, Raceboards 8, Access 4, Tasars 2, Windsurfer ODs 8. Nine races in total were sailed over the four days. All starts and finishes were from the shore in front of the Clubhouse. Race Officers enjoyed the social aspects of the Winter Series and were available to answer enquiries about the Club during the racing from interested passersby. Conditions and winds varied over the series from overcast and cold to brilliant Winter sunshine. We experienced a Northerly 8 – 12 knots, a Sou’- Sou’wester 5 – 8 knots, a Westerly to Sou’wester 12 – 15 knots and one day of Sou’west to Sou’east to Northerly ranging from 5 – 8 knots! Rescue crews were kept busy on the final day due to gusty conditions. Race officials have recommended that two rescue boats be used if the course is laid past Rodd Island towards the Iron Cove Bridge so that all areas of the course are patrolled (especially if Access dinghies are racing). As always, a series does not run smoothly without efficient organisation and the many volunteers prepared to give of their time to make the racing a success for members and visitors.
